Cults and mail deliveries

It is June, it is summer and there isn’t birch pollen to bother me either anymore. The best months of the year are ahead when it comes to the weather.

Yet, I’ll focus on writing about what I’ve been playing on my gaming console. Seems more interesting than, let’s say a 36 kilometer bicycle trip I did the other week.

Raising a cult

But what have I been wasting my time with? One was Cult of the Lamb, which was about being a lamb raising a cult in order to free an imprisoned God who had revived the lamb from a ritual sacrifice.

The game was split into two mechanics: beating up heretics and monsters in roguelike dungeons and managing your cult followers to keep the faith and not dying prematurely. There were some Animal Crossing vibes about it.

It certainly was something different and just the right length to keep me going until the final boss (total time around 30 hours).

“Beware of sin!” Preaching in the Cult of the Lamb.

Delivering the mail

Then I moved onto Lake, where I played a female computer developer in the 1980s filling her father’s job as a mailman for two weeks in her old hometown. Basically the game was about delivering mail (duh) and getting to know the residents in the small town in Oregon. Based on dialog choices, different endings emerge.

Unfortunately, I was going through a hectic phase at my real work, so I decided in the game not to be social at all, sticking to delivering the mail, working on my actual developer job in the evenings and just watching some a silly sitcom night after night (because of this, I was able to finish the game in five hours).

The end result? While the game was nudging me to move back to my hometown with any new found relationship, in my case I still left the hometown after those two weeks and became a millionaire in my developer job. Win?

It did make me think for a moment am I acting the same way in real life, avoiding opportunities that are there to take. Might actually be so.

Adventures in space

I also watched maybe a dozen episodes of Space Adventure Cobra, an anime tv-series from the 80s. The plot in those was along the lines of the full feature movie I saw earlier. It was actually fun to watch an old anime tv-series with such a different vibe than more recent anime series.

It did start to get repetitive though, and I wasn’t too bothered I had to return it to the library prematurely as someone else made a reservation of it too.

Another episode of gun fights, smoking cigars and plenty of half-dressed women.
