Lately I’ve been watching a lot of movies at home and at the movie theatres. There are a few reasons.
First reason is that I finally caved in and bought a new television to replace my old one. While I had to go through the regular buyers remorse phase, I eventually got over it and now justifying the purchase by watching more movies than I usually do.
Second reason is that I subscribed to Mubi for a whole year (for 60 euros, it wasn’t a bad deal), so I have to make use of it too. I hate having subscriptions I never use.
Third reason, or should I say motivator, is joining the Letterboxd service to log what I’ve been watching. There certainly is a sense of gamification by logging movies into your profile and getting a better idea what I’ve been watching through the stats. I wish there were more options to make some stats non-public, though.
I won’t be reviewing movies or even rating them with a score, as I don’t want my movie watching pastime feel like a job or affect my thoughts while watching (“This is so far a three star movie, but lets see it that will change fowards the end”).
Fourth reason is an attempt to counterbalance my time against video gaming. I’m aiming for a ratio that I only play the same amount of hours I’ve used watching movies. Last year I spend around 500 hours playing video games and “only” around 100 hours watching movies. It will be interesting to see can I even get to a 2:1 ratio.
Yet another Final Fantasy game
As for gaming, I started playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. So far I haven’t been too enthusiastic about it. Sure, it looks great and there is a lot of customisation to fiddle around with the characters. Yet I’m not too crazy about the light-hearted anime-like personalities and storyline. I guess the previous game Clair Obscure is still fresh in my mind.
But like all previous games I’ve started playing the past years (the exception being No Man’s Sky), I will continue playing it to the end and hopefully start enjoying it too.
